How to blow £229.14 in 84 minutes. :(

Posted by: Will – Priority Juggler on May 22nd, 2007

Simple 3 step plan to throw away £229 in less than an hour and a half.

1. 0938: Think that it might be a good idea to put up some PPC, targeting Chelsea Flower Show searches. Set up campaign at default bid levels.

2. Spend an hour wrestling payroll and our online banking system.

3. 1102: Check back to see how the campaign is going, have heart attack, frantically scrabble to pause campaign, kicking self repeatedly.

Impressive Marketing Campaign Results

Duration: 84 minutes

Impressions: 7,291 (wow)

Average position: 1.2 (quite high - hope we’re not overbidding)

Clicks: 716 (9.03% CTR - excellent)

Cost: £229.14 (crikey)

Sales: Zero (aaaargh!)

Conclusion: Let’s just put those 84 minutes down as a brand awareness exercise or something.

  1. Hang on, what exactly did you do wrong here?

Is it that you targeted CFS but people looking for the CFS were not really looking to buy flowers?

I mean surely a lot of advertising is hit and miss?

  2. You make a good point. My slightly opportunistic attempt just came back to bite me. Haha. You live and learn!

  3. Lovely to see other people having similar experiences.
Did you manage to point out the reason why it didnt perform?

Maybe you deep linked to the international page ;)

  4. We also gave out fliers at the event, but with very little effect. I guess the thing is that, whilst it’s called a flower show, it’s really a lot more about gardening. Ah well, we’ve learnt something!
