Fair Flowers Fair Server - Carbon Neutral Flower Hosting

Posted by: Samwise of the front end on July 2nd, 2007

A couple of weeks ago we moved our website to greener pastures; RackSpace. Moving ISPs is not something you want to do on a regular basis and is often associated with fear. The fear of losing something along the way (our website and thus livelihood, for instance!).

This time the process of migration was done with a certain elegance (aka Fanatical Support). This is the red carpet of support where you get thanked by a techie for letting them help you. Alright a little Americanised but a welcome break from the level of support we were used to.

The move was also significant as we were moving from one server to two and splitting our bespoke application to suit. After another weekend of testing and code releases (and early mornings for Zach our lead developer) we have completed the final stage and are now fully operational across the two boxes.

That not enough for you? Alright chuck in PCI compliance as well then! Due to escalating sales we were required to get PCI compliant and apparently it’s up to them to set the deadlines. I am fairly confident they had a look at my diary to find the worst possible time to do it, in order to give us the full shakedown :) In fact this is almost another post as it took a month to get right so will save that rant up for another day.

It is easy to get on with the job in hand and forget that there is more to life than upgrading to the latest version of Rails. That is why it was such a pleasure receiving this certificate from RackSpace this morning:

Top Of The Sustainability Class

The certificate reads:
“We would like to confirm that following your hosting contract with Rackspace, trees have been planted in Holyland Woo, Pembroke. This will help towards neutralising the carbon emissions created by the server/s.”

Our servers are twinned with two trees in Pembroke - love it!

  1. Bub,

Sounds like a Larry Flynt enterprise, “Hustler’s very own ISP RACKSPACE….”

Carbon neutral too, double forward thinking…perhaps as you surf it will only display pictures of chicks with eco friendly tofu implants….

Seems like it will cater for the the niche markets though what with that “WPC Compliant” thing, very imaginative

I do feel however that c ompany such as yours should really be keeping abreast of environmental developments as they happen. I do appreciate what you ahve done so far, however be sure not to rest on your own home made, knitted out of lentils, laurels.

Just this morning I heard of a new service where they actually grown your servers from seed. Depending on the type of hardware your require growing usually takes form 25 to 40 years. The service I saw advertised said that it encourages people to “overspec” on their requrements stating that “futureproofing” should always be at the forefront of industry’s mind.

Come on Arena, get with the program, until your fancy dan all singin all dancin IT kit has been sown into God’s good earth, and had season’s fair hand and nature’ fine nourishment grow it from nowt but an acorn…you will not be ranked amongst the true Huggers of Tree…

The Migratators tale…a tiresome tome if ever there was one….

  2. I think the only response to this comment is: “Blimey!”

    :D

  3. Or at least “cor blimey”
