Something For The Weekend – Giant, Smelly Flowers

Posted by: Will – Priority Juggler on July 6th, 2007

We’ve been trying to work out which of these two “wonders of the natural world” is the most bizarre and/or disgusting. We can’t decide, so over to you! Let us know what you think in the comments section.

The Raffelsia, the world’s largest flower: Whoever has been lucky and seen the humungous flower knows that it is simply breathtaking. Of a vivid to velvety deep red it is normally spotted white, giving it the appearance of a slab of meat. Together with this appearance come one or more gallons of nectar of a sweet-foul smell reminiscent of rotting flesh to attract flies which pollinate the flower.

Or…

2. Titan Arum: The world’s smelliest flower has opened in the United States. The bloom is attracting thousands of admirers despite its stench of rotting flesh, which can be picked up a kilometre away. It is the first time the flower, Amorphophallus titanum or Titan Arum, has bloomed outdoors in cultivation. “It smells like a dead person,” said one of the crowd. “I happen to be a nurse and that is exactly what it smells like.”

Unsurprisingly, these flowers are not available from Arena Flowers! Flowers with the smell of rotting flesh simply aren’t up our street; we prefer lovely fragrant freesias, summery stocks or even pink lilies. Have a great weekend, and don’t forget to let us know what you think!

  1. Not available from Arena Flowers? Will, you’re a nutter.

Get the Titan Arum and the Raffelsia on the list immediately if not sooner. It’s exactly the sort of out of the box thinking that makes waves. You gotta take some risks man. ;O)

    Haven’t you read Purple Cow?

  2. “I smelt this and thought of you!”.

Not sure if that would be very well received. We might have to put our delivery drivers in a suit of armour to protect him from irate recipients!
    :)
