ASTRANTIA

Astrantia major, maxima and carnicolica are commonly known as masterwort or Hattie's pincushion.

Astrantia are beautiful large flowers which have clusters of tiny, delicate, starlike flowers, like a papery ruff marked with green tints. Since the flower is star shaped, it has been assumed that the Greek word astron meaning star plays a role in the origin of the name.

Astrantia is an old plant name with the origin unknown, but is now grown in Central and S. Europe and West Asia. Its first recorded cultivation began in Belgium in 1574.

The colours vary from greenish white to rose pink and red. It is available in the summer and autumn.
