STRELITZIAS or BIRDS OF PARADISE
Strelitzias, also known as the Bird of Paradise, orginates from South Africa. They are named Strelitzia after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Streliz, who married King George III to become Queen of England in 1761.
Strelitzias have a green 'beak' with a bright orange and blue crest, silvery-green leaves, and are available all year round, although there is limited availability in the summer. They are an impressive flower and often used by florists in dramatic floral arrangements and occasion office receptions.
Purchase Strelitzia when the first flower bud is fully open. They ooze sap which can make the flower quite sticky; this sap should be wiped away carefully. Pull away wilted crests and new ones will pop up from inside the 'beak'.
