The tulip is a plant of the large genus Tulipa, hardy, bulbous-rooted members of the family Liliaceae found in abundance on the steppes of Central Asia. Cultivated tulips, popular as garden and cut flowers and as potted plants, are chiefly varieties of T. gesneriana. They have deep, cup-shaped blossoms of various rich colours. Tulip seeds are said to have been introduced into Europe in 1554 from Turkey, where they were possibly first cultivated. The name tulip comes from the Turkish for turban, after its rounded form. Botanical name Tulipa. Tulips are classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Liliopsida, and order Liliales.

They come in every colour except blue and true black, and are available mainly from November to May, however, you can now get them all year round. Tulips are the third-biggest selling flower in Holland and are also very popular in the UK where many are also grown. The painter David Hockney displays them in his studio in Los Angeles and so they appear in many of his autobiographical paintings and for a long time were seen as his trademark.

Tulips continue to grow in water and will curve towards the light. Make allowances for this when putting them in a vase or wrap the stems tightly in newspaper and stand them in water directly beneath a light for a few hours. Tulips have a vase life of just over a week, and buy flowers in bud but with colour showing.

Tulips are a popular choice of Mother's day flowers due to Mother's day often corresponding with the tulip season and their colourful and cheerful petals.
