There are a number of popular flower shows and events within easy reach of Chester. The Tatton Park Flower Show is one of the biggest flower shows in the North-West and is based around four themed zones which are set out across the beautifully kept gardens. The Tatton Park show is well-established having been running since 1999 and is now spread over 28 acres of the Tatton Hall gardens. Most visitors are there to enjoy the plants and floral displays but there are good catering facilities as well. The Tatton Deli serves hot and cold snacks, whilst for a more formal dining experience the Retreat Restaurant or the Garden Lounge at the Tatton Brasserie are decent options.
The Shrewsbury Flower Show is another popular event not far from Chester. It has been taking place for over 125 years and now hosts over 400 exhibitors each year. The event is not just about flowers; it hosts a range of food and drink stalls, showing jumping and steam locomotives. Flower enthusiasts are well-catered for nonetheless and there are impressive displays of flowers, herbs, hanging baskets and patio plants.
Chester Zoo is obviously first and foremost associated with animals but it also has a number of interesting gardens to explore which are maintained by the Zoo’s Horticulture and Botany team. The Andes Garden displays plants and shrubs from across South America whilst the Glorious Grasses area is an educational area used to explain the use of different grasses to visitors.
Here there are nursery greenhouses which house a number of plant collections. Most impressive of all is the display of flowering orchids which displays many of the zoo’s 2,500 strong orchid collection. The greenhouses are also home to flowers and plant from tropical regions of the world with highlights including ficus and epiphytic plants, begonias, ferns and fly-catching carnivorous plants.
Walton Hall Gardens are also within reach of Chester and provide an entertaining day out for families with children of all ages. Walton Hall itself was formerly the home of Lord and Lady Daresbury and has extensive green-flag award winning gardens. Admission to Walton Hall allows access to amongst other things: a children’s zoo; crazy golf, miniature train and the Heritage Centre Café which snacks throughout the day.
Chester itself is a city where flowers and plants brighten up many parts of the landscape. A walk around the city walls will give an aerial view of the flowers in parks and green spaces across the town centre, giving a clear indication that Chester is a place that appreciates it flowers.
