There are plenty of flower events, festivals and competitions in and around Enfield all year round. With local community projects, urban gardening collectives and larger festivals, there is always something to keep flower lovers interested in the area. Here are some of the highlights for 2014:
The Enfield Town Show Horticultural Schedule is packed full of talks, events and demonstrations for all flower and garden enthusiasts. With exhibits from the Floral Art Society, Beekeeping demonstrations and traditional flower and vegetable competitions, you're sure to find something to inspire you to get your gloves on and get gardening.
Organised and run in partnership with the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS), the Enfield Floral Club hosts events, talks and competitions in the town throughout the year. As well as monthly meetings where members can discuss their flowers and gardens, the club also organise trips to flower festivals and shows and hold demonstrations and debates for their members in partnership with other floral clubs in the local area.
Capel Manor Gardens hosts a number of flower and garden related events throughout the year. Every July it hosts the Fuchsia Festival in cooperation with the Enfield and District Fuchsia Society, which as well as hosting competitions also provides advice and tips for budding fuchsia growers in the local area. In 2014 the festival will also include tours around Capel Manor and its gardens and a sales event where you can buy fuchsia flowers and everything else fuchsia related. If fuchsias aren't your thing, then you can also visit one of the other events at Capel Manor, for example the National Sweet Pea Competition, Autumn Bonsai Show or the City Harvest Festival. The Gardens host events all year round, so it's worth looking at the website and finding an event that interests you.
The former home of the Parker-Bowles family, Myddleton House and its gardens are a great example of self-taught horticultural skills. Designed and developed by amateur gardener Edward Augustus Bowles in the nineteenth century, Myddleton House shows you don't have to be an expert to get beautiful results. The garden has since been restored to its former Edwardian glory and now boasts a number of stunning traditional features, including a stone garden, a river and freshwater source, an Alpine Meadow of exotic plants and flowers and an expansive rose garden. Soaked in local history, the garden is a must for any local gardeners looking to get in touch with Enfield's rich gardening tradition.
The setting for the Fuchsia Festival (above) and a number of other flower and garden related events throughout the year, Capel Manor is a former Georgian stately home turned horticultural and agricultural college, with over 30 acres of beautiful surrounding gardens. There really is something for everyone here, with a variety of themed and stylised gardens including a Japanese Garden, an Italianate Maze and an Historic Garden showcasing the best in Georgian landscaping. You can also immerse yourself in Sunflower Street, a series of front and back gardens designed by floristry and landscaping students at the Capel Manor College. An example of great gardening and teaching, Capel Manor Gardens is a must see.
Enfield really is a buzzing location for all things flower and garden related. From events and shows its gardens and horticultural college, the area is alive with flower design, floristry, gardening and landscaping enthusiasts.
