Flower events in Wales

With beautiful countryside and an abundance of farmland, Wales has a great history of producing exciting and innovative flower designs and floristry. The flower design and gardening calendar is full of events, workshops and festivals all year round. With so many to choose from, here are some of the highlights of the upcoming year.

Cardiff CastleRHS Cardiff Flower Show

Held every year since 2005 in the grounds of Cardiff Castle, the RHS Cardiff Flower Show is quickly becoming a major event in the flower design calendar not only in Wales, but across the rest of the United Kingdom. Attracting over 20,000 visitors, the event showcases some of the best in flower design, gardening, landscaping and floristry from across Wales, with awards given for Best in Show and Gold Standard for a number of categories. The highlights of the show in 2014 included entries with an emphasis on urban gardening and sculpture in garden design, and Cornwall R.A.'s daffodils, which won Best Exhibit in the Floral Marquee.

Prestatyn Flower Show

Although smaller than its counterpart in Cardiff, and held without the funding of the RHS, the Prestatyn Flower Show is now entering its 20th year - with 2014 set to be its most successful. The show combines the traditional parts of a flower show, including competitions, awards and talks, with jazz, classic cars and motorbikes, and poetry readings. In 2014 the schedule included a new vegetable competition and the addition of a junior flower design class. These smaller, independent shows can sometimes attract the more innovative and ground breaking designs, and are not to be missed.

Gardens and flower areas of interest in Wales

Aside from the shows, events and festivals packing the flower design calendar in Wales, there are also a number of beautiful gardens and areas of interest to those with a penchant for flower design across the country. With so many to choose from, and the selection ranging from country house and Royal Horticultural Society gardens to city parks and river banks, here are some of the best in show.

The National Botanic Garden of Wales

"Has become the best garden to visit in the country, winning countless awards"

The National Botanic Garden of Wales opened in 2000 and has since then become the best garden to visit in the country, winning countless awards and recommendations for its romanticism, beauty and variety. With over 8000 different flowers, plants and trees over 560 acres of land, the Botanic Gardens is one of the most diverse in Wales. It also contains a selection themed gardens, separated from the main grounds, including Japanese, tropical and wild gardens with Penrhyn Castleappropriate plants and flowers. The Gardens is also home to world's largest single spanning glass house, as designed by Norman Foster and his partners. It houses plants and flowers from six different areas of the world, which represent the great diversity of plant life on our planet.

Penrhyn Castle

Dating back to the nineteenth century, the neo-Norman stylings of Penrhyn Castle are surrounded by a great garden full of flowers and plants. Set on a hillside and with stunning views across the Welsh countryside and the northern coast, this castle and its expansive grounds are home to a variety of plants and flowers in exciting and innovative designs. The flowerbedding creates a border around its highest point, from which the view stretches far across the hills.

The 60-acre garden is also home to a series of exotic trees, shrubberies and a walled, Victoria style vegetable garden.
