Flower events in Wigan

Wigan Flower Club

Founded in 1963, the Wigan Flower Club meet every month to discuss and promote all things flower and garden related. Their popular and ground breaking demonstration series, with one demonstration taking place each month, offers attendees an insight into the more obscure and difficult areas of flower art, flower design and floristry. Their members' work has appeared at a number of gardens, churches and flower shows around the United Kingdom, including the Southport Flower Show, Westminster Abbey and Hoghton Towers.

Gardens and flower areas of interest in Wigan

Outside the main city centre, Wigan is home to a number of stunning gardens and flower areas of interest with a wide range of flowers, plants and trees on offer.

The Ridges

Built in the eighteenth century by local landowners and then redeveloped in the early 1800s, The Ridges country house and estate possesses a wonderful garden showcasing not only great flowerbeds, but also a variety of fruits and vegetables. A six-acre plot surrounding the house, the centre piece is a walled vegetable and fruit garden which provides the produce for the on-site kitchen. Outside this main area, the landscaped lawns, trees and carefully designed flowerbeds then give way to a series of orchards and a glass, Victorian summer house.

Norton Priory Museum and Gardens

Located a bit further from the city centre than The Ridges, Norton Priory Museum and Gardens is home to a vast collection of medieval monastic and religious artefacts and a stunning garden. The garden surrounds the main museum building, with 42 acres of flowers, trees and woodland all open for guests to explore. Norton's main attraction is that dotted throughout the gardens are remains of monastic buildings and priorys, contrasting fascinating archaeological and historical sites with beautiful flowers and plants. The garden also has an authentic medieval herb garden, which draws on historical record to present the herb garden as it would have been at the time the priorys and monastic buildings were originally in use.
