Flower events in the Philippines

Flowers play a very important part in people’s lives in the Philippines. Panagbenga Festival is a flower festival that happens every year in Baguio, the summer capital of the country. It lasts an entire month and begins in February.

The festival was established not only to pay tribute to the city's beautiful flowers, but also as a way to help people get over the devastation that the 1990 earthquake left behind. The festival is full of colourful floats that are decorated with flowers and street dancing. The street dancers are always adorned by beautiful costumes full of flowers.

On top of the economic boost received from tourism, the festival also helps the younger generations of local indigenous people to get in touch with their culture's traditions.

The festival’s main events are:

•Opening parade

•Trade fair and bazaar

•Parade and street dancing competition

•Float and marching band competitions

•Session road in bloom

•Closing ceremonies

However, this bill was was rejected by President Benigno Aquino III and now the waling-waling remains an unofficial symbol.
