Surrey has a wealth of beautiful gardens to visit throughout the year. The RHS Garden at Wisley is famous for its collection of plants built up over 100 years. It is arranged over 60 acres of park and woodland featuring formal gardens, lakes and lawns. A huge glasshouse showcases a whole range of plants and rare species from three different climate zones.
Entering the structure is like visiting a different world, as you are greeted by huge tree ferns and beautiful flowers in a steamy, tranquil atmosphere. A new development for 2014 is the spectacular 150 metre long Mediterranean walk, while some key events to look out for include the Surrey Sculpture trail in late summer and the Wisley Flower Show in September.
On a different scale, but no less memorable, is Loseley Park; a two and a half acre walled garden near Guildford, based on a design by Gertrude Jekyll. The rose garden is particularly spectacular, containing over 1,000 plants in a profusion of colours, while the wildflower meadow is a complete contrast to this, with its unstructured vista of flowers. A garden show is hosted here from 18th to 20th July.
The National Trust owned Winkworth Arboretum, near Goldalming, is well worth a visit, whatever the season. The bluebell, magnolia and rhododendron displays are outstanding in the spring and in autumn the bronze, gold and crimson displays of the colour-turning trees are not to be missed.
Painshill Park near Cobham is an intriguing place to see flower displays in Surrey. It is a 158 acre 18th century landscape garden with some unusual and beautiful follies dotted around the landscape including a Crystal Grotto, faux ruined abbey, and Gothic Tower. Events to look out for include a Honey Bee Festival on 20th July and several tours of the Crystal Grotto in August and September.
One of the most famous horticultural venues in Surrey is the 300 acre Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, near Richmond. It is one of the UK’s top attractions and is famed for its series of themed glasshouses which contain a stunning array of plants and flowers. For example, you can see alpine flowers such as lavenders, tulips and the rare Chilean Blue Crocus in the Davies Alpine House and then for a complete contrast you can visit the Palm House to see tropical palm trees and climbers. The roses are in bloom between May and August and there is a Healing Giant raised flower bed featuring medicinal plants laid out in the shape of the human body, on show until September.
Closer to home, wherever you are in Surrey, you can bring the colours and scents of an array of beautiful flowers, into your own or a loved one’s home, courtesy of the Arena Flowers delivery service.
