Mother’s Day in the UK is always three Sundays before Easter, because it has its origins in the 16th-century tradition of ‘Mothering Sunday’, the fourth Sunday of Lent. This occasion originally saw people visit their ‘mother church’. Servants were usually given the day off, and as it was a rare opportunity for families to get together, the focus of the day evolved to visiting mothers, not just mothering churches. In the US, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, a tradition that began in 1908 after the American Civil War as a way to honour mothers nationwide. Flowers have long been associated with Mother’s Day, tracing back to its origins in the 16th-century when people would gather wild flowers on their way to visit their mothering church. Steeped in sentiment, flowers make great Mother’s Day gifts as they send messages of love and affection, while filling their home with colour, cheer and sweet scents. 

Carnations have become twinned with Mother’s Day thanks to the US, when white carnations were distributed on the very first Mother’s Day in 1908. This has since evolved to become a classic Mother’s Day flower, particularly in shades of pink, as this symbolises gratitude.

Chrysanthemums are often fondly referred to as ‘mums’, which would make them a fitting Mother’s Day gift, however they are an Autumn flower and therefore not in season during Mother’s Day. There are lots of different varieties of chrysanthemums, ranging from small daisy-like shapes to big, multi-petalled blooms. They are sometimes confused with dahlias. Carnations start flowering at the end of Spring, and have delicate ruffled petals.

Carnations are often given on Mother’s Day thanks to their association with gratitude, but classic Spring blooms such as tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and ranunculus are also good options as they are in season at that time of the year. Pink roses are a nice gift for Mother’s Day, as they symbolise family love, admiration and happiness.
