Flower events in Huddersfield

Huddersfield may not be as famous for fabulous flower displays as other Yorkshire towns such as Ilkley and Harrogate, but it hosts a number of annual events that are abundant in colour and style.

Perhaps the leading show in the area is the Kirkless Flower Shower. Taking place over two days each August, the event is held in Greenhead Park and typically features beautiful shows from the Huddersfield and District Fuchsia and Geranium Society, the Yorkshire Gladiolus Society and the Huddersfield Allotments and Gardens Federation.

There are also competitions in vegetable growing, flower displays and floral arts. Entry is just 50p for adults while those under 16 are admitted for free.

Another regular arranger of events around Huddersfield is the Pennine Borders Flower Club. Almost every month the club has something going on at its base in the Meltham district of the town or at the Methodist church in nearby Linthwaite, with speakers often invited in from other parts of the country.

Flower facts for Huddersfield

Huddersfield has been represented well at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in recent years. 2012 was a particular good year for gardeners from the Kirkless region as Richard Clegg and his son Lewyn scooped a gold award for their stunning Bronte-themed garden.

The pair spent six days down at the show after collecting ideas on walks to Top Withens near Haworth, and their creation simply wowed the judging panel.

Gardens and flower areas of interest in Huddersfield

Arguably, the best place to see stunning flowers in Huddersfield is in the aforementioned Greenhead Park. Opened in 1884, the park is only a mile from the town centre but is a very peaceful place with a central lake and Italian gardens featuring stunning floral arrangements.

Crow Nest Park in nearby Dewsbury is also worth a visit. Set on a hillside, the park offers stunning views of the West Yorkshire countryside and has been given a Green Flag award for beauty. It features an adventure playground and museum as well as formal lawns, a greenhouse, ornamental lake and walled wildflower garden. It is looked after by the Friends of Crow Nest Park group, who work tirelessly all year around to ensure its borders and circular displays look the best they can.
