FAQS about dried flowers
Do dried flowers need water?
No, dried flowers don't need any moisture. Adding water will cause the stems to go soft and collapse on themselves. In other arrangements like wreaths, spraying with water can make colours run, or patches of damp leading to mould.
Where is the best place to put my dried flowers?
Like with cut flowers, dried ones like to be kept out of direct sunlight, as this helps them keep their lovely colour. Direct or bright light will make them fade quicker, and heat can cause them to become brittle - so try to avoid putting them near heat sources like radiators or fireplaces too.
How do I look after dried flowers?
Dried flowers don't like draughty or humid conditions. They also do their best when kept away from direct or bright sources of light. You can also keep them dust-free by gently going over them with a duster, spraying compressed air from a distance, or a hair dryer using the lowest power and temperature settings.
How long do dried or preserved flowers last?
This really depends on both the method that's been used to preserve them, and how they're treated.
If you look after your dried and preserved flowers, they can last a long time looking their best - up to a year or more. Make sure they're kept cool and away from sources of direct sunlight or heat. Dust them gently, and store them in similar conditions and your flowers will look good for much longer.
Flowers that have been dried will generally last longer than preserved ones. Preserved flowers usually go through a drying process using fluids like alcohol, and then have a colour applied. This reduces their lifetime in comparison, but only slightly.
How to display dried flowers?
Once you've chosen the vase or vessel you want to put your flowers in, it's important to make sure that it's completely dry before arranging your dried or preserved flowers. This will help them stay dry and not develop mold.
The next step is finding the right spot for them. Here it's key to find somewhere in your home that doesn't get direct sunlight - we know they look glorious in the sunshine, but this will cause them to become brittle over time. Similarly, avoid putting your flowers near sources of heat like open fires, woodburners and radiators. You also don't want it in the path of a doorway or window that gets draughty, as the changes in temperature will weaken the flowers.
